Nailing IT: Tyesa

Tell us about yourself.

I work as an engineer here in Houston by way of Chicago. I was born and raised in Chicago and I’ve been in Houston for 16 years. Prior to moving here, I lived in Southern California where I worked in Redondo Beach for 2.5 years. I have been married for 4 years and we have a 4 year old dog named Prince. I enjoy reading, watching the Chicago Bears & Kansas City Chiefs football games with my husband, cooking, mentoring, and spending time with friends and family.

How did you discover your love for nails?

I discovered my love for nails as a little girl when my mom taught me how to polish my nails. As I became a teenager we would polish our nails at night together and talk about everything. It was a beautiful time for me to unwind and bond with my mom. When I left Chicago polishing my nails became a time of reflection and relaxation! Plus I loved the finished product!

What are some strategies and resources you utilize to overcome obstacles and achieve your goals?

One strategy that I use is connection! I pray about everything and ask the Lord for direction and help. I ask for favors from people that can help me. I then connect with people who are ‘experts’ in the goal I want to achieve. Sometimes these are strangers whom I form a mentor relationship with or friends who I personally know excel in the area of my goals. Or influencers I follow on social media. I try to connect with people who have been where I’m going! My second strategy is once I receive information/advice I would then develop a plan of execution loosely using the S.M.A.R.T. method (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-based). Strategies I use for overcoming obstacles are praying, depending on what it is then I would go to counseling and seek out wise counsel. The wise counsel for me are friends, sometimes coworkers, and church members I can call on for Godly wisdom and advice.

What does self-care mean to you?

Self-care to me means knowing myself so I can determine what I need and when it’s needed. I know I get energy from going to bed on time, moving, relaxing my mind by reading or meditating, and eating protein, fruits, and vegetables. So I try to do those things. I’m still working on meditating, moving, and eating better consistently! Self-care also means knowing the weak areas that I may need assistance or help in and getting it. Whether it’s finding a community, counseling, etc. Self-care also means spending time with friends and family and having fun.
